President's Corner

Open letter to the SUNY Maritime Nation:

The spring semester is well underway.  How quickly my own first semester as president of SUNY Maritime has passed.  Since my arrival in late August, 2011, I've had many wonderful opportunities to meet and get to know our students, faculty, staff and alumni.

What an exciting time it is to have the opportunity to lead the SUNY Maritime Nation into a new phase of growth and expansion in depth and breadth of impact.

In late October, I served as a panel moderator at the annual Women on the Water (WOW) Conference at Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The panel was made up of senior level women working in the maritime industry from the public sector. During the course of the three-day WOW meeting, I also met with many maritime industry women who hold important positions in all areas of the industry. Next fall, SUNY Maritime College will host the 2012 Women on the Water Conference and we are already starting to develop a strategic plan for the meeting here on campus.

Following our exciting diesel engine donation from Wärtsilä, and the NASDAQ Closing Bell Ceremony, we're now looking ahead to an exciting spring semester. We will continue our outreach within the industry as well as with local, state, regional and national public sector officials to create new public as well as public-private partnerships.

The Empire State recently returned from a brief dry dock period and even now we are thinking about and planning for the Summer Sea Terms with a record number of Cadets aboard.

As the new year gets underway, please remember SUNY Maritime by making a donation to the Sallyport Fund.

Your donation to the Sallyport Fund supports the College and raises unrestricted funds for tuition and operational assistance, athletic and extra-curricular activities, faculty and staff enhancements, educational programs, and allows us to meet the mission and philosophy of SUNY Maritime College. To learn more, please visit: http://www.sunymaritime.edu/SallyportFund/index.aspx, or call Joan Kretzmer in our University Relations Department at 718-409-4983.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and commitment to the future of our students and this fine institution. All of your support continues to cement the strong heritage of Maritime and poises the school and its graduates for unparalleled impact in the future across a broad number of areas.
