The Dr.'s notes
Today's feature story is about the ship's library. Each year during the pre-cruise period, a collection of reference materials is packed up and brought on board for Summer Sea Term. This includes all the regulars, like Bowditch, the Merchant Marine Officers' Handbook, the Guide to Port Entry, and copies of the CFRs (Code of Federal Regulations) our students use. Librarian Geraldine Hébert also makes note of any materials requested by students, and brings them along too. In addition, the ship's library brings on board an extensive Gove Collection of books on seafaring and travel books for the ports we'll visit. The database is stocked with digital texts and publications ("pubs") used for sight reduction calculations (celestial navigation) and calculations of tides and currents, as well as digital copies of the CFRs and port information. Over the years the ship's library has accumulated donations of fiction books, as well, for recreational reading. Oh, and did we mention the movies? Due to a generous yearly donation from the Parents Association, Geri is able to stock new DVD releases and shows two per night on the big screen television in the cadet lounge. The library is open every morning, afternoon, and evening while we're at sea.
Geri offers the following photos of students in the library:

How many times do we have to tell Cadet McFarland not to put his feet up on the furniture?!?
Librarian Geraldine Hébert has been with Maritime College part-time since 2004, and this is her third Summer Sea Term.
And just outside the library we find Cadets Meelheim, Manson and Sapuppo in the cadet game room. (Through the game room is the cardio room... see the treadmill?):

Down at the quarterdeck an alarm goes off to signify that a smoke detector on the starboard side of main deck has been activated. It turned out to be a faulty sensor, but each smoke detector in the area was checked:
Cadets Folks, Bagis, and Drury on Bosun watch at the quarterdeck
Cadets Ennis and Carniato search for the activated smoke detector
And as we prepare for Arrival Palma:
Cadets Clemet, Aslan, Arnold and Adderley wait to get paperwork in to the Security office before arrival.
More tomorrow...
