Welcome to Malmo, Sweden!
Prof. Breskin writes...
Senior administrative staff at the World Maritime University in Malmo on Saturday hosted eight SUNY Maritime cadets and staff at an orientation session on campus and an international student party later held nearby.
School president Dr. Karl Loubstein explained to SUNY visitors the history, academic programs and future plans of the 25-year-old school, a short train ride from Copenhagen. The school offers graduate programs (for Master's and PhD candidates) in Maritime Safety, Marine Environmental Administration and Maritime Administration.
Dr. Loubstein stressed to visitors the international nature of the university; typically its 300 full time students come from as many as 70 different countries, many in the developing world.
World Maritime University is affiliated with the United Nations but receives no recurrent funding from it. Like SUNY Maritime, its goal is to produce a next generation of highly qualified maritime industry professionals.
We'd also like to mention that former President of Maritime College Rear Admiral Sheldon Kinney participated in the founding of World Maritime University (WMU). Upon leaving Maritime College he became the first Vice Rector of WMU and later went on to take the position of Rector.
Librarian Geri Hebert offers the following photos of the trip to World Maritime University:
The Dr.'s notes
A few of us were in Malmo in the fall of '05 for a conference of the International Association of Maritime Universities (IAMU). We loved it there, and before arrival Copenhagen we prepared some information for the students who wanted to explore the city on their own. We were excited to hear that many of the cadets made the trip.

Back in Copenhagen, our rugby team played the Copenhagen Exiles, most of who are Superleague (semi-professional) players:
Jared O'Haire fighting over a ball
Joey Temperini taking a hit
Jon Miller throwing a precise line out to Tom Doty
Just one more day in Copenhagen, then we're headed home! More tomorrow,
--Dr. M
