Western Suffolk BOCES and SUNY Maritime College have partnered to offer two levels of US Coast Guard (USCG) approved license courses. These two levels of instruction will run concurrently.
The first leads to an USCG Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) Captain’s license. The OUPV “Six Pack” license is ideal for boating enthusiasts that wish to work in charter fishing, SCUBA diving, or tour cruises (limit of 6 paying passengers per charter). This course requires 56 hours of instruction.
The second leads to an USCG 100 Ton Master license. With a USCG endorsement, the “Near Coastal” license is ideal for fishing party boats, dinner cruises, ferries, or water taxis. This course requires 80 hours of instruction. The near coastal enables one to captain up to 200 nautical miles on up to a 100 ton USCG inspected vessel with more than six passengers.
Throughout this class you will learn practical aspects of boating, including:
rules of the road, radio operation, survival techniques, distress signaling, boating terminology, boat equipment, use of flares, use of life jackets, techniques of seamanship, anchoring, aids to navigation, boat registration, navigation, marlinspike, firefighting, towing and more.
After completing the course, students take the USCG exam; given at Western Suffolk BOCES (no testing at the USCG Regional Exam Centers is necessary). Maritime College will provide all Coast Guard paperwork and assist students with completing the application. Once you successfully complete the course and pass the examination, submit, within 1 year, the original Maritime College Certificate along with your application package and applicable fees to the USCG Regional exam center.
