First annual Mark Chadwin Award for Juniors and Seniors majoring in International Transportation & Trade

A Monetary Prize will be awarded to a winning entry in an essay contest.

Dr. Larry Howard, chairman of the SUNY Maritime College Global Business and Transportation Department (GBAT) announced the first annual Mark Chadwin Award for SUNY Maritime College juniors and seniors majoring in international transportation and trade.  Dr. Chadwin was the first Chair of the Global Business and Transportation (GBAT) Department.  The award will be presented to the student with the winning entry in this first annual essay contest.  This year’s topic will be The Relationship Between Culture and Globalization: Opportunities and Threats. “ Students responding to the topic should apply it to the nation of their choosing and its relations with the United States,” advised Dr. Howard.

“When Mark passed away last spring,” noted Dr. Howard, “his family decided that each year in his honor, we would run an essay contest for students majoring in International Transportation and Trade (ITT).  Much of Dr. Chadwin’s work focused on the importance of the impact of culture on international business activities. We chose to set this year’s topic because of that.   Dr. Chadwin was  passionate about students being able to write clearly and concisely and get their thoughts organized.  The winning essay will be articulate about the topic, elegant in expression, and impeccable in grammar, usage, and reference style, and be complete in no more than five pages.”

The essay must be submitted in Word file format to Professor Jim Drogan (jdrogan@sunymaritime.edu) or Dr. Larry Howard lhoward@sunymaritime.edu.  The deadline is Monday, April 19th and is only open to juniors and seniors in the International Trade and Transportation (ITT) major at SUNY Maritime College. The best essay and award recipient will be publically announced at the Spring 2010 Graduation Awards Ceremony on Thursday, May 6th.  Students are urged to contact Dr. Howard (XT 2977) or Professor Drogan (XT 7289) with questions.

TMGT 8370 Shipboard Operations for Shoreside Managers, taught by Captain Joe Ahlstrom this summer session I, will take place in part on the Carnival Glory.

The Carnival Glory will depart New York at 1700 (5 PM) June 10 (Thursday) and return
0800 on Monday June 14, so those of you who have a job can arrive back in New York to work on Monday if you need to or are inclined.

Depart and Arrive at the West Side Passenger Terminal Pier 88-92

The Canadian port of call on June 12 is at St John’s New Foundland where you will have a chance to walk on the ocean floor in the Bay of Fundy, which has a 26 foot tide range.

We will register 16 students for TMGT 8370 Shipboard Operations for Shoreside Managers.  How can you be one of them??

We have to act quickly to lock in favorable rates.  Read carefully and follow these steps:

1)    Send an email to Captain Ahlstrom at Jahlstrom@sunymaritime.edu identifying
yourself (including ID # and PIN) and describing your interest.  Wait for his “OK,”
which will be quick, to follow the rest of the steps

2)    Be prepared to make a $100 deposit on a total cruise cost $390 for an ocean view
room, or $455.68 for room with balcony.

3)    Reserve the room with a room-mate (or one will be assigned) by calling 866-721-3225,
push 2, then ask for reservation aboard Carnival Glory by a code that Captain
Ahlstrom will give you when he OKs you as able to enroll in the course

4)    Register for the course after 6PM on Sunday March 28th

Please note that you must be OK’d in advance by Captain Ahlstrom.
If you have not completed all graduate core courses (TMGT 7000-level courses), you can only register by getting an Add form signed by Dr. Howard.

I repeat that we must act quickly to lock in the favorable cruise rates that Carnival Cruises has agreed to, so contact Captain Ahlstrom now!  If you wait until graduate registration for summer courses on March 28th it will be too late!

You can view the Carnival Glory and the available cabins by going online at http://www.carnival.com/cms/fun/ships/carnival_glory/default.aspx?shipCode=GL

To All Graduate and “Fast Track” Students:

The College is implementing a new policy regarding orientation to the graduate program and the sequence in which graduate courses are taken.  It is already programmed into the registration system and is effective beginning November 15th when graduate students begin to register for spring classes.

Policy Details:

All new graduate students for January 2010 are required to take TMGT 6001, Orientation to Graduate Studies, a one credit course.  International students should sign up for TMGT 6001-02, completely online students should sign up for TMGT 6001-03, and all other students should sign up for TMGT 6001-01.  Vicki Ferritto is the instructor for all three sessions.

Please understand that the initial orientation meeting scheduled on the afternoon of Monday, January 11th is mandatory and part of the TMGT 6001 orientation course.  All new graduate students who are not completely online are expected to attend the meeting; you cannot get an “A” in TMGT 6001 without attending the meeting, and an absence will count against the attendance policy of the course.  Online students will have the initial meeting material addressed in their class format.  The course instructor will verify that students registered in section 03 are in fact, completely online students.

TMGT 6001 is a co-requisite in the registration system for all graduate core courses.  A new student cannot register for graduate core courses (TMGT 7000-level courses) unless first signed up for TMGT 6001 Orientation to Graduate Studies.

All graduate core courses (TMGT 7000-level courses) are pre-requisites for electives (TMGT 8000-level).  New students cannot enroll in a graduate  elective class until completing all 6 core courses.  In the second semester we will make exceptions on a case-by-case basis for concurrent enrollments as long as most core course requirements have been satisfied.

If you have any questions, please contact the undersigned.

All graduate students should be aware of which faculty member is assigned to them as an academic advisor.  Advisors  are: Lawrence Howard, James Drogan, Francis (Stash) Pelkowski, and for graduate license students, Water Nadolny.
