- What's required to be successful in distance learning at Maritime?
Please make sure you have reviewed and understand the similarities and differences between learning in the classroom and learning online. These can be found here.
Education at Maritime is based on the Carnegie model. In essence this means that we expect a student will spend nine (9) hours per week (in class or outside of class) for a three (3) credit course held over a 15 week term.
Note that in the brief discussion on similarities and differences we mention that Maritime online courses have the same learning objectives as do the classroom courses, but take place in eight (8) weeks.
Hence, you should think in terms of spending 18 hours per week on an online course. Some will spend more; some less.
It is vital that you spend the necessary time each week on the course. The recommendation is that you sit aside time every day to work on the course. The general practice by the professors teaching online courses is that they give neither extra credit or makeup work.
This means that you need to be motivited, disciplined, and a good manager of time.
Distance learning courses require access to the Firefox web browser and a broadband link to the Internet. Slow speed lines (e.g., dial-up) and other web browsers are problematical.
So, three critical success factors; 1.) availability of time, 2.) motivation and discipline, and 3.) proper technology.
- What are the responsbilities of the student regarding online education?
When you register for an online course you assume a set of responsibilities for gaining maximum value from the course.
First, be sure you know your Maritime e-mail id and password. Critical messages are sent to you regarding online learning via this means. And, if you are taking an ANGEL course, the Maritime e-mail id and password are required for access. Call the Help Desk (see Getting Help in Online Learning) if you have forgotten this information. Monitor your Maritime e-mail on a regular basis.
Second, be sure you know how to connect to the course (see Access to Your Online Course in Online Learning) and technological capability required (see the answer to question 11 above).
Third, be sure you know when the course starts and stops. These dates are in the Maritime Registration System. Show up ready to go and stay active during the entire course. If you must drop the course, contact the Registrar and execute the standard drop procedure. Also advise the course professor of your decision. Don't simply stop showing up and think that we will clean up after you.
Fourth, be sure to have the course text and any other required material in hand prior to the start of the course. If in doubt as to what this is, send an e-mail to the professor of the course. The professor's name is given in the Maritime Registration System.
Fifth, if in doubt on anything ask for help (see Getting Help in Online Learning).
- I can log in to ANGEL, but I don't see the course for which I have registered. Why not?
Maritime uses a combination to automated and manual processes to build the ANGEL roster from the Maritime Registration System.
At 7AM each business day (Monday through Friday, excepting holidays) a program runs against the Maritime Registration System and pulls together a set of data regarding all ANGEL courses, the students registered therein, and the professors teaching the courses.
This data set is subsequently modified manually and then sent to SLN who subsequently apply it to the ANGEL system, usually by noon on the day it is sent.
Any registration for a course after 7AM will be picked up the next business day. Hence, it could be as much as 29 hours (5 + 24) before a student sees the course in ANGEL.
