ITT Internship Information
GBAT Department Policy for the ITT Internship:
Course Description:
Candidates for the Bachelor of Science in International Transportation and Trade are required to perform an internship in an organization in international transportation, trade or another aspect of global business or to complete a summer work experience aboard a SUNY Maritime training vessel. The activities are intended to familiarize ITT candidates with professional work environments and expose them to career opportunities. Prerequisite: GBUS 100. Credits: 6 Graded as Pass/Fail
Procedure:
Students generally sign up for the course using an “Add” form, so that they are sure to be interviewed and given a full set of instructions by the supervising instructor who is normally the department chair. The instructor reviews the class roster for any student who has electronically signed up for GBUS 525 but who has not been interviewed and given the formal papers. He reaches out to such students, makes sure they should be registered in the course, and if not, drops them from it.
At the interview, the student is told the following:
- GBAT cannot guarantee an internship; the heaviest burden in finding one rests on the student’s shoulders.
- Go to the Placement Center at Baylis Hall and make an appointment to see the Placement Counselor; as a first step she will help you update your resume and put you through some mock interviewing techniques, then make available to you the information that the Placement Center has on private and public sector organizations willing to take on student interns.
- Send a Word file of the updated resume to the instructor who supervises GBUS 525, and any other faculty member with whom you want to work. The professors will volunteer to facilitate networking and help explore intern possibilities.
- Attend functions of local professional organizations such as the Connecticut Maritime Association and the Council for Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) Roundtables.
**The student is given official ITT Internship documents and their use is explained (the documents are here attached in a link at the bottom of this page.)
Internship Requirements are:
- Minimum of 180 hours of work in the internship
- Complete a 10-page academic paper that:
- Describes the work done in the internship
- Describes the students’ career goals and evaluates whether the internship facilitated those goals
- Evaluates what was learned in the internship; the student is posed the question, “what do you know after having done the internship that you did not know coming into it?
- All documentation (see link below) must be completed
- A public presentation, on the basis of the academic paper, will be made at the end of the semester
