International Transportation and Trade (ITT)
Building on its tradition of preparing students for all aspects of international commerce,
SUNY Maritime offers two degree programs in international transportation and trade:
- Four-year program: This program is for students who come to SUNY Maritime as an freshmen (or without significant prior college experience) and declare themselves as ITT majors. This is a program of excellence – ITT students must maintain GPAs of 2.5 or higher.
- Upper division program: This program is intended primarily for students who have completed an associate’s degree at a community college. Students with such a degree (or equivalent college experience) should be able to complete the upper division requirements and earn an ITT degree in four semesters and one summer. Candidates for the ITT program are expected to have GPAs of 2.5 or higher.

The ITT program is designed for strong students who are interested in careers in trade, transportation, and other aspects of international business. ITT students will receive the training that may someday enable them, as a CEO or hiring manager, to hire the graduates of other programs. Although some ITT candidates enroll part-time, most are full-time students.
ITT students pursue a course of study that includes marketing, management, and finance leading to advanced classes in subjects such as marine insurance, importing and exporting, port and terminal management, and admiralty law. Students may also choose to design their upper division studies to attain a minor in intermodal and maritime security, preparing them to enter a field of growing international concern. Another option open to good ITT students is a “fast track” 5 year program wherein students who maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher can substitute some graduate courses for senior requirements and be accepted in Maritime’s graduate program. The graduate program offers a Master of Science in International Transportation Management.
Two distinctive features of the undergraduate ITT degree are a capstone seminar in strategic management or transportation economics and an internship/work experience usually undertaken in the summer between the junior and senior years. The internship/work experience immerses the ITT student in a professional environment within an organization involved in international transportation, trade or some other aspect of global business. Students choose from a variety of possibilities including internships in multinational corporations, assignments in public agencies. In the process, each student builds his or her resume, while establish relationships that often lead to career opportunities.
For men and women with an interest in international commerce, SUNY Maritime’s ITT program may be the key to success--whether in New York, the world’s business capital, or elsewhere in the global economy.
