The Application Process
Freshman admissions decisions are based on the strength of your high school curriculum, SAT or ACT scores, extra-curricular activities and letters of recommendation.
The fall early decision application deadline is Nov. 1. The regular deadline to apply for fall admission is Jan. 31. If you want to start at SUNY Maritime in the spring, you must apply by Dec. 2.
High School Curriculum
Admissions counselors want to know that applicants have pushed yourself in high school. A great way to demonstrate this is by completing AP and honors courses.
We recommend that all applicants take
- 4 years of English
- 4 years of social studies
- 3 years of mathematics (pre-calculus is required for engineering)
- 3 years of science (chemistry and physics are strongly recommended)
We take note of students' progress in grades as well. Applicants should have improving or solid trends in their grades through high school. SUNY Maritime looks for students who have excelled in math and science.

All freshman applicants must take the SAT or ACT. We look at the combined score of critical reading and mathematics sections on the SAT. Our exam codes are:
- SAT: 2536
- ACT: 2954
SUNY Maritime College accepts the essays submitted through the SUNY application and the common application. Students must complete the essay portion of either application to be considered for admission.
The second part of the SUNY application includes a place for the required essay along with extracurricular activities.
In the common appliction, the essay requirement is fulfilled through one of the given prompts. There is also a place to talk about extracurricular activities.
Letters of Recommendation
Two letters of recommendation are required. They provide another viewpoint through which we can learn of your talents and achievements.
We prefer one to be from an academic source, so counselors can see the student's capability beyond the high school transcript. The second one can be from another academic source, a coach or another mentor.
Letters can be submitted through SUNY Campus Connect, Naviance or postal mail, sealed and direct from the high school guidance office to our mailing address below.
Early Decision Agreement
If a student decides to attend SUNY Maritime College and applied early decision, the applicant must fill out the early decision agreement form no later than Nov. 1.
The college application process can be intimidating but we are here to help. If you prepare early and get your application done in advance, your transition from high school to college will be seamless.
