FAQ's
Q: What is Maritime’s admissions deadline? What are the required application materials?
A: Maritime operates on a rolling admissions policy, which means that there is no set deadline. The Office of Admissions makes a decision once it has received the SUNY application, high school transcript, SAT and/or ACT scores, and any supplemental materials a student wishes to include, such as an essay or letters of recommendation. The sooner a student gets all materials in to the Office of Admissions, the better, as spaces tend to fill up quickly.
Q: What GPA and test scores does a student need to be accepted?
A: A solid 3.0 GPA (an 85 or “B” average), and a combined Critical Reading and Math SAT score of 1000.
Q: What is Maritime’s tuition? How are payments processed?
A: For the 2008-2009 academic year, tuition was $4970. Payments can be processed online by e-cashier monthly.
Q: Does Maritime offer academic scholarships?
A: Yes; there are several scholarships available, including a four-year, full-tuition scholarship for qualified New York State residents. Students are also encouraged to pursue outside scholarship awards.
Q: Is student housing available? How safe are the facilities?
A: Students who participate in the Regiment of Cadets are required to live on our campus in the suburban Throgs Neck area of the Bronx for all four years. Non-regimental students are granted campus housing on a first come, first served basis. Students require a key to enter residence hall rooms. Further information, including a Campus Safety Report, can be found on the University Police website.
Q: Does Maritime offer health insurance to students? Are there facilities for emergency care?
A: There are doctors and nurses on staff at the Health Services center. There are also several hospitals located nearby in the event a student needs to go to the ER. A health insurance policy, detailed here, is available for students.
Q: What type of Coast Guard License can you pursue?
A: Students may pursue a 3rd mate deck license or a 3rd assistant engineer's license.
Q: What can disqualify you from obtaining your license?
A: Cadets who have prior criminal convictions, or who have certain medical conditions, including those that require the use of certain prescription medications, may be found ineligible for a U.S. Coast Guard license and/or Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC). Additionally, certain criminal convictions may also preclude a Cadet from obtaining a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), which must be held in order to qualify for and maintain U.S. Coast Guard mariner credentials.
Q: Does Maritime offer career guidance and internship assistance to students?
A: Yes. In addition to each student being assigned an academic advisor, the Career Services office offers advice and help with preparation for students to enter the job market or secure an internship.
Q: What companies hire Maritime graduates?
A: Maritime graduates enter the maritime industry and beyond. Career Fairs take place on campus throughout the academic year. Many Maritime alums work for companies that recruit Maritime students, so it is possible to make valuable industry connections through career fairs or internships.
Q: I’d like to take a tour of Maritime College. Can I do this without my son or daughter?
A: Campus tours are available Monday through Friday at 10am or 2pm. Please call the Office of Admissions at 718-409-7221 to schedule an appointment. You should bring your son or daughter with you for the tour, so that they have the opportunity to see the school firsthand.
