International Students

SUNY Maritime College welcomes students from other countries as members of our community. Our commitment to excellence, in and out of the classroom, enables students to thrive in an environment that caters to their specific needs. With small class sizes, and our unique hands on component through our Regimental Corp of Cadets; our classrooms come to life, exposing our students to every facet of the Maritime Industry!

SUNY Maritime College offers students the opportunity to combine classroom theory with ‘real life’ practicality, in the form of semesters at sea aboard our training vessel; the Empire State VI.  This not only gives our international students the opportunity to participate in our Regimental Corp of Cadets as students and officers during Summer Sea Terms, but it also grants United States Coast Guard certification. Although, due to citizenship requirements, international students may not obtain a United States Coast Guard License, this certification allows them to take the equivalent examination in their home country.

International students who are interested in attending SUNY Maritime College will need the following to apply:

1.       General SUNY Application – this can be found on our website, or you may request an application via email at admissions@sunymaritime.edu

2.       World Educational Services (WES) Evaluations of Transcripts – this is an English translation of your transcripts and is needed for all secondary school and university or college coursework that you have completed. You can request this evaluation through their website at www.wes.org

3.       Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) Exam Scores – This is a requirement of language proficiency for students whose native language is not English.   Dates and additional information on this exam can be found at www.ets.org

4.       SAT Test Scores – These scores are required for native English speakers.

In addition to the application, immigration regulations require that each applicant submit a “Confidential Statement of Finances”, demonstrating how he/she plans to finance his/her education. Every sponsor is required to provide a notarized affidavit of their sponsorship in addition of documented proof of this support, be it financial or room and board.   Please note that international students are expected to finance their education in its entirety. Upon acceptance, it is required that all financial documentation be submitted to the Office of Admission, and it the sole responsibility of international students to obtain a student visa in order to begin their studies at SUNY Maritime College.
