Transfer Students
How to Apply

Transfer students are selected primarily on the basis of their most recent academic performance. Transfer applicants should submit the following credentials:

  • A completed State University of New York application, mailed to the SUNY Application Processing Center, Albany NY 12246;
  • Official college transcripts from each college attended or now attending including current courses (if applicable) sent directly from the institution to the Maritime College Admissions Office.
  • Official high school transcripts, indicating date of graduation.

Curriculum structure and federal requirements for unlimited license preparation are such that students wishing to pursue Degree/License programs can ordinarily complete degree and license requirements in about three years. The additional year for students transferring into a Degree/License program is due to U.S. Coast Guard requirements for sea time and specialized coursework beyond the degree.

Transfer students pursuing the Degree/License Program are required to complete the Indoctrination Program (see "Student Life") in August, prior to commencement of the fall semester, or in January prior to the spring semester. Upon completion of the Indoctrination Program, transfer students from sea service academies and other maritime institutions may request an upgrade of class status. All other transfer students into Degree/License Programs will enroll as Fourth Class cadets for their first year at Maritime. Transfer students pursuing a Degree Program are required to attend the new student orientation, but will enroll directly at the appropriate class level.

Students who have completed an appropriate associate degree program, and desire to transfer as Degree Program students, can ordinarily complete their baccalaureate work with an additional 60-70 semester hour credits of course work beyond the Associate's Degree level; Maritime has worked out articulation agreements that document the details of such transfers.

Transfer applicants without associate degrees or with associate degrees not directly applicable to Maritime College programs, will be awarded advanced standing credit on a course by course basis.

Bachelor's & Master's Degree
Students with an Associate Degree and a 3.00 cumulative GPA or higher may be accepted into the Dual Degree Program and work simultaneously toward a Bachelor's and Master's Degree.
