FAQ’s

Q: I’d like to apply and find out how many transfer credits I’ll receive. How do I do this?

A: Maritime operates on a rolling admissions policy, which means that there is no set deadline. The Office of Admissions makes a decision once it has received the SUNY application, and College transcripts.  Once you have been accepted and have submitted your statement of intention to attend the college then the transfer office will be able to evaluate and determine the amount of transfer credits you will receive.

Q: Will an admission counselor visit my college?

A: Maritime College admissions counselors make personal visits to many two-year colleges in the tri-state area. During these visits, counselors can provide admissions advisement, and an estimate on transfer credits.

Q: Are there admissions counselors available to guide me through the transfer credits?

A: Our admissions team is happy to provide personal attention and guidance about different majors and requirements for entrance to SUNY Maritime College. The transfer credit evaluator is also available to answer specific questions about transfer credits.

Q: Can courses I took at my previous college(s) be considered for transfer credit?

A: Yes. Coursework is considered for transfer credit if the school at which it was taken is certified by a regional accreditation body such as the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.  Coursework is also considered for students that have had military training.

Q: What is the maximum number of credits I can transfer?

A: You can transfer 75 credits from a 2 year college with a completed Associates Degree, and 90 from a 4 year college with a completed Bachelors Degree.

Q: Will my GPA from my previous college(s) transfer to Maritime?

A: No. Transfer credits are recorded on the Maritime College transcript, but they will not count toward GPA.

Q: What grades are eligible for transfer?

A: Grades of C or better are transferable with exceptions for certain majors.

Grades of C-, D, and D- are acceptable only under the following conditions:

•    Grades were earned in courses at a school where an associate's or bachelor's degree was completed with a cumulative 2.0 GPA and the courses counted toward the degree.

Q: I am an international student. How do I transfer credits from a college abroad?

A: You need to submit all official transcripts to SUNY Maritime College. In addition, you will need to submit transcripts for review to an approved foreign transcript evaluation agency, such as World Education Services. This agency certifies accreditation status of the school, attendance, duration of study, type of degree, as well as grades and number of credits earned in U.S. terms. Students are also advised to submit course descriptions/outlines/syllabi to facilitate the transfer evaluation process.

Please note: This transcript evaluation report is required for Maritime College to consider your international coursework for transfer credit. You should start the process as early as possible to ensure your credits are prepared before registration.

Q: Are there scholarships for transfer students?

A: Yes. Scholarships are competitive and typically require a 3.0 GPA and 32 or more college credits.  They are typically two- year scholarships and range in amounts.
