Advanced Standing Credit
Advanced Standing Credit

Advanced standing credit may be granted to students who participate in various programs cited below. In addition to these external advanced placement programs, students may achieve advanced standing or advanced placement on the basis of appropriate examinations and other means of evaluation established by a department. Students who are granted such credit will ordinarily be exempted from a corresponding number of credits for graduation.

Advanced Placement Program (CEEB)

Advanced standing credit may be extended to students who have completed courses in secondary school in the Advanced Placement Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. Candidates undertaking Advanced Placement courses in secondary school are expected to take the appropriate examinations and to request that their scores be forwarded to the college. The table below indicates the minimum CEEB score required to earn Maritime College advanced standing credit. The College will grant up to 18 such credits for courses taken while enrolled in a secondary school.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level Examinations

Students may also receive advanced placement with credit by earning an acceptable grade on the IB Higher Level Examinations.

College Level or Proficiency Examination

The Maritime College also grants advanced standing credit for satisfactory performance in the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) of the College Entrance Examination Board and the College Proficiency Examination Program of the New York State Education Department, whenever such examinations include material covered in a similar course at the Maritime College. Qualifying performance level and appropriateness of syllabus are determined by the department in which the corresponding Maritime College course is taught.

Service Connected College Level Experience

The College grants credits on selective basis for formal service school courses listed in the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services. Credit may also be given for United States Armed Forces Institute (USAFI) and DANTES courses.
