Counseling Services provides brief solution-based mental health services to individual students experiencing emotional or situational difficulties and can help a student adjust to college life in a supportive and understanding environment. The office is in Health Services on the first floor of Riesenberg Gym.
One-on-one and group counseling is available to help with depression, anxiety, academic issues, interpersonal relationships, sexuality, stress, grief/loss, anger control and roommate issues. Sessions focus on empowering the student to continue toward education goals, or to re-evaluating curriculum and career plans with the individual's health in mind.
Counseling assists people by:
- Providing a safe, accepting and confidential atmosphere to discuss problems, thoughts and feelings
- Building a trusting relationship with an objective, trained professional
- Gaining new perspective on difficulties and developing ways to deal with them
- Offering referrals to other support and opportunities to develop relationships with local therapists, self-help groups or substance-abuse agencies
Counseling appointments are available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. In times of crisis, walk-ins are welcome.

Maritime Intervention Team
SUNY Maritime is concerned about the safety, health and well-being of its students, faculty and staff.
As a result of growing national trends on college campuses of mental health issues and the increase in hospitalizations and deaths due to alcohol consumption, Maritime College created the Maritime Intervention Team. The team helps to maintain a healthy environment for the community by accepting anonymous tips that someone may be struggling.
