Counseling Services
Counseling Services provide brief solution-based psychological services to individual students experiencing emotional or situational difficult. Counseling within a college environment is an opportunity for a student to learn more about their interpersonal worlds, while easing the discomforts often encountered in the course of college life. It is the goal of Student Support Services to offer supportive venues that will nurture the emotional and intellectual integrity of all Maritime students. As with Health Services, Counseling Services does not attempt to replace the student's private physician or therapist, nor does it assume total responsibility for psychiatric needs. Staff professionals are available, however, to assist with crisis intervention and related needs.

The Counselor provides one-on-one and group counseling dealing, though not exclusively, with additions in all its forms including food, alcohol and other drugs, gambling, work, sexuality, and PC's. Support groups are formed based on need or interest. Issues around loneliness; confidence and self-esteem; abusive / destructive relationships; family and fiscal problems; anger control and stress management; grief / loss; fraternization; harassment / hazing and roommates are also part of the counselor's scope. Students are referred by the Regimental command, faculty, judicial boards, staff, parents, and other collaterals, or the students themselves. In supportive conjunction with those who have made the referral and through guided conversation, the counselor works with the student pertaining to their respective concerns. In all cases, focus is on empowering the student to either continue towards his or her education goals or re-evaluating curriculum and career plans in a way most healthy for the individual.

Maritime Intervention Team:

The State University of New York Maritime College is concerned about the safety, health, and/or well-being of all of its students, faculty, and staff, and has policies regarding the well-being for all members of the Maritime College community. Specifically, the policies address student activities that are disruptive to the mission of the College, as well as any suicidal or self injurious threats or behaviors.

As a result of growing national trends on college campuses of mental health issues and the increase in hospitalizations and deaths due to alcohol consumption the Maritime College created the Maritime Intervention Team (MIT). The MIT has been charged with upholding these policies and maintaining a healthy environment for the entire Maritime College Community.
