Relationship with Other Police Departments

The investigation of crimes committed on the campus generally falls under the jurisdiction of the University Police Department although the New York City Police Department has concurrent jurisdiction.

Because of the University Police Department’s limited investigative and forensic capabilities at the Maritime College and the New York City Police Department’s extensive capabilities, the investigation of any serious or violent felonies and missing persons are routinely turned over to the NYPD after the initial response by the University Police. By formal Memorandum of Understanding the New York City Police Department is also available to assist the University Police whenever necessary.

The University Police Department also maintains a working relationship with the New York State Police and the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority Police which posts officers on the campus 24 hours a day to protect the Throggs Neck Bridge.
