Cadet Observer Overview
The Cadet Observer Program is an intricate, unique, and rigorous component to an already rich history of SUNY Maritime College’s maritime education. The program provides real-life maritime exposure to further prepare students for their USCG Third Mate’s or Engineer’s license in a professional, industry-supported environment. The Program is under the direction of the Professional Education & Training (PET) Dept.
Cadet Observer Minimum Requirements: *Must have successfully completed one training cruise
*Minimum GPA 2.3
*Must be in good regimental standing (Cadets holding a Class I offense are not eligible.)
*Must hold a valid MMC
*Must hold a valid TWIC
*Must have current Passport
*Must obtain a USCG-719K Nine-Page Physical
*STCW Letters and DRUG Letters are required and coordinated by the Cadet Observer Coordinator through the MT Department and Regimental Affairs Office, respectively

Cadet Shipping Periods:
Spring "In Lieu Of" Cruise: Academic Only - Cadets must first apply through his/her Academic Department early in fall semester for eligibility. Academically- and regimentally-approved Cadet Observer Candidates will then attend the Career Center's October (TBD) Cadet Observer Meeting. Cadet Shipping Dates: Christmas Day through the commencement of Pre-Cruise.
Summer "In Lieu Of" Cruise: Academic Only - Cadets must first apply through his/her Academic Department for eligibility. Academically- and regimentally- approved Cadet Observer Candidates will then attend the Career Center's Cadet Observer Meeting. Cadet Shipping Dates: Conclusion of Academic Board Meeting through Commencement of Fall Semester.
Post-Cruise Cadet Observer: Available only for those cadets registered for First-Session Cruise This Cadet Shipping Session does not require Academic Department approval, however, the minimum requirements stated above must be met. Application is through the Career Center at an Informational Meeting held in March (TBA via Maritime Blast). Cadet Shipping Dates: July through commencement of Fall Semester (eight weeks).
Winter Cadet Observer: This Cadet Shipping Session does not require Academic Department approval, however, the minimum requirements stated above must be met. Application is through the Career Center at an Informational Meeting held in October (TBA via Maritime Blast). Cadet Shipping Dates: End of Fall Semester through commencement of Spring Semester (About four weeks).
