H1-B Cap Gap Extension
The cap gap is an automatic extension of your F-1 immigration status and work authorization that occurs to bridge the gap between the expiration date of your EAD card and the start of your H-1B status. This allows you to stay within the United States for the duration of your wait without having to return home.
To be eligible for the cap gap extension, you must have filed a petition for an H-1B visa before your OPT expiration date. International Student Services will need proof of the request and therefore requires you to submit a copy of either the I-797 receipt notice or the H1-B approval notice. Once you have given International Student Services the proper documentation, the international student advisor will issue a new form I-20 that will document proof of your cap gap extension.
