Maintaining F-1 Student Status

As an international student on an F-1 visa, you are held responsible for maintaining your student status. It is important that you learn, understand, and comply with ALL of the following academic and immigration regulations to prevent violation of your legal status in the United States.

  • Keep a valid passport at all times
  • Maintain full-time enrollment each semester at the school you are authorized to attend, as indicated on your I-20
    • Undergraduate students = registered for 12 credits
    • Graduate students = registered for 9 credits
  • Obtain authorization from International Student Services prior to dropping below a full course load
  • Keep Form I-20 up to date
  • Notify International Student Services office of change in address (within 10 days), program of study, program dates, level of study, or name change. 
  • Apply for a program extension before your immigration documentation expires
  • Get I-20 endorsed with travel signature before traveling outside of the United States
  • Comply with the U.S. Federal Employment Regulations
    • Prior approval to work is needed by International Student Services and the U.S. Federal Government
    • You may not work more than 20 hours per week while school is in session
  • Follow the proper transfer procedures when relocating to another college or university
