Off-Campus Employment

Only students with special authorization may apply for off-campus jobs. Students holding an F-1 visa are otherwise prohibited from acquiring off-campus positions. You must be given approval to apply for off-campus employment by International Student Services. The international student advisor will review your individual case of economic hardship. Only students with severe economic hardship may be granted authorization to work off-campus by the USCIS. Therefore, if International Student Services does not find that your circumstance(s) necessitate off-campus employment, you cannot send an application into USCIS.

Upon acceptance to SUNY Maritime College, you were required to show your ability to pay for your education and living expenses while in the United States. You must show that new, unexpected circumstances have created severe economic hardship in order to be considered for an application for off-campus employment.

In addition, you must be unable to obtain on-campus employment, or the on-campus employment does not suit your financial needs; and you must have been enrolled at SUNY Maritime College for at least one full-time academic year.

$380 filing fee is required when sending in your application. You are not guaranteed authorization for off-campus employment because the international student advisor has allowed your application to be filed. The USCIS makes the final decision.

You must continue to maintain your student status after the receipt of your EAD. You must be enrolled in a full course load each semester, and you cannot work more than 20 hours per week while school is in session.

Contact International Student Services to discuss your options pertaining to your individual case.
