Opening a Bank Account

To open a bank account you will need:

  • SUNY Maritime College student ID
  • an initial deposit which may be accepted in the form of cash, personal check or a traveler’s check
  • your immigration documents (passport, I-94, and Form I-20)
  • International Student Services can give you a letter of enrollment, if necessary

There are a lot of banks in the area, many on Tremont Avenue. Do your research to make sure you find a bank that meets your needs and won't charge you a lot of fees.

Before you open an account, ask the bank about:

  • Account privileges for students
  • Monthly or annual service fee
  • Minimum balance requirements
  • Monthly check/usage fee
  • Cost of using other ATMs
  • Online banking options
  • Special services (i.e. transferring money to and from home, bill payments)
