Opening a Bank Account
To open a bank account you will need your SUNY Maritime College Student ID, an initial deposit which may be accepted in the form of cash, personal check, or a traveler’s check, and your immigration documents (passport, I-94, and Form I-20). International Student Services will also provide you with a letter of enrollment if necessary.
You have many bank services available to you to choose from (many are located on Tremont Avenue). You will want to choose a service that is suitable to your needs. To avoid costly surcharges and hidden fees, make sure to research the banking policies and procedures before opening your account.
Some topics you will want to discuss are:
- Account privileges for students
- Monthly or annual service fee
- Minimum balance required
- Monthly check/usage fee
- Cost of using other bank ATM machines
- Online account
- Special services (i.e. transferring money to and from home, bill payments)
