Taxes

ALL international students are required to file Form 8843 located on www.irs.gov. This form is to be completed and returned to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) even if you have not held employment or received any income for the previous year.

For those students who have earned income, have been rewarded with (taxable) scholarship, or whose country has an income tax treaty, they must file the proper tax return(s) with the IRS. The link provided will help to answer any questions you may have about U.S. taxes: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p519.pdf. You may also search the IRS homepage for more detailed tax information. International Student Services will not be able to provide you with further assistance on tax issues.

If you do not have a Social Security Number, and cannot be issued one, you must apply for an ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number). This number is to be used for tax purposes only. To apply for an ITIN you must complete the Form W-7 and return it with your tax return(s) and Form 8843. You may find the form on the IRS website or it will be available in the International Student Services Office.

Be sure to pay attention to the deadline(s) required by Internal Revenue Service. You do not want to have any late submissions.
