SUNY Maritime College’s TSES has installed a new and improved satellite e-mail System which is operational for the 2006 Summer Sea Term use.
The past years e-mail program proved to be very popular among cadets and parents alike. This year the Captain is improving upon the e-mail system’s reliability and availability even further by implementing the latest technology available and in use by many commercial ships. The account and cost will be voluntary and you will able to sign up for it during pre cruise week or any time after at sea or from ashore using a credit card. There is a $5.00 monthly charge and then a per e-mail charge depending on how long the e-mail is. It will be from $1.50-$2.00 per minute satellite time. Your cost will be in direct proportion to your usage. Email is compressed and sent in batches to keep costs low. SeaWave's phone number is 800-746-6251.You will be able to keep and use this account once you graduate.
The most recent improvements have been the repositioning of the satellite antenna, to help eliminate blind spots, and added an internal website for students to read about the latest events through the daily news program. In addition to the Library computer lab, e-mail/study lab, and classroom lab, we have updated software on the exclusive e-mail/study lab for first class cadets located on the main deck.

Rules

Rules, regulations to help control costs and limitations of the e-mail system are as follows:
• Cadets are permitted an e-mail average of 10 per Day.
• Messages to and from should not exceed 25KB per message.
• Messages are text only! No attachments or embedded images
• Profanity, SPAM, and any other offensive content will be blocked!
• E-Mail account operational problems should be reported by cadets only to insure efficiency!
• The ship’s e-mail system status will be updated daily on our website if there are problems.
• Maritime College offers the use of e-mail as a privilege and reserves the right to suspend/revoke its use at anytime.

SeaWave and Iridium are providing global satellite communication services and email for the New York Maritime Academy training ship T/S Empire State (TSES).
SeaWave, an Iridium value-added manufacturer, is installing an Iridium-based SeaWave Integrator 3.0i system on the TSES to provide reliable voice and data communications for the ship’s officers, crew and cadets during their annual at-sea training cruise.
The SeaWave Integrator 3.0i is the hub for all vessel communications. It functions as a stand-alone router or network server with built-in Iridium, GPS, optional GSM and external satellite connections. It connects to a ship’s network or PBX, providing the captain with detailed billing for voice and data traffic. The Integrator hub performs throughput optimization, least cost routing, vessel tracking, spam protection and user access management, and serves as the gateway to remote vessel management and file/server access. They have installed similar solutions on other training ships and passenger cruise vessels that demand reliable communications and a hotel-style billing for multiple users
