Seaman to Admiral-21 (STA-21)
The STA-21 program provides an excellent opportunity for highly motivated active duty enlisted personnel in the Navy or Navy Reserve to pursue both a Baccalaureate Degree and an active duty commission in the U.S. Navy. SUNY Maritime is one of 17 universities selected by the Navy to host STA-21 Nuclear Option students.
STA-21 Officer Candidates enjoy expeditious processing of applications and are often provided acceptance letters and degree plans within days of applying. The $10,000 education allowance provided by the Navy currently covers all tuition and academic fees.
Officer Candidates may elect to live on campus or in the local community. Military Housing is available at Mitchel Complex in Nassau County Long Island.
Application procedures and eligibility requirements are detailed in Chapter 8 of OPNAVINST 1420.1A and amplified by NAVADMIN message promulgated in the spring. Applications are normally due by 15 July each fiscal year with selection results announced in September or October. Upon notification of selection, interested STA-21 students are urged to contact the Maritime College Admissions Office and the NROTC Unit which will provide assistance with the application process.
