High School Sailing - Fall 2017

Learn to sail, race or gain the skills to compete at local, regional or even national level regattas in our exciting, new program - High School Sailing at Maritime College! Students of all abilities in grades 7 through 12 are invited join SUNY Maritime College for our Fall Season of High School Sailing.  SUNY Maritime College provides everything needed to participate including sailboats (420s, FJs and Keelboats - weather dependent), coaches, safety boats, and life jackets at one of the best waterfront facilities in the country.  High School Sailing is co-ed and open to both individuals and teams. Sailors from multiple schools will be combined based on skill level, have an opportunity to sail with different partners, and may attend regattas as part of a composite team.  If students want to compete they can do so with the support of their school or under SUNY Maritime College’s name. Dates and Times:       Mondays and Fridays September 11 though October 30, 2017

(excluding Friday, October 6th and Monday, October 9th)

Coaches: Waterfront Staff, Maritime College Sailing Team Members

Time: 4 pm to 6:30 pm

Age/Prerequisite: 7th through 12th grade students, beginners to advanced racers

Fee: $400 per person, teams choosing to compete will incur additional regatta entry fees

Community Sailing

In May and June we invite the community to get out on the water for an evening sail on our 20-25 foot keelboats. Learn to sail, improve your skills, make new friends or just enjoy the scenery in a fun, relaxed atmosphere for one low price. No experience necessary. New sailors will be matched with SUNY Maritime College Waterfront Staff or more experienced sailors. Come try it. We guarantee you will love it.

Dates: 2018 Dates to be announced in December!

Time: 5pm – 8pm

Prerequisite: 6 years old+; if under 18 you must be accompanied by an adult.

Fee: $250 per person, $600 family (two adults, up to three children under 18 living at same address); $25 for guest (if space available)

Maritime High School Sailing Team Race Clinic

SUNY Maritime College Head Sailing Coach Zach Runci and Assistant Coach Morgan Wilson will host an advanced team racing clinic for you to take your team racing skills to the next level. The event will be two days of racing and coaching in collegiate 420’s, including chalk talks and video debriefs.  This is the perfect event for junior sailors in 8th -12th grades to improve their team racing skills as either an individual boat or a whole team race squad. Breakfast will be provided Saturday morning and lunch will be provided both days.

Time: 9am - 5pm Daily

Age/Prerequisites: Students in 8th – 12th grades, individual skippers/crew, boats or whole teams welcome

 North U Rules and Tactics

North U. Seminars teach racing strategy, tactics and rules with an emphasis on practical, straightforward ideas that will help you win- and you can’t play the game if you don’t know the rules. The North U Rules & Tactics Seminar covers the racing rules (new & old) and related tactics with a case-based curriculum so you’ll understand your rights, obligations and tactical options in every situation.  Dave Perry’s North U Racing Rules & Tactics Workbook is included with the course  North U Seminars feature top instructors - not just great sailors, but outstanding seminar leaders with decades of teaching experience.  The emphasis is on your sailing, not their sea-stories.  Register today!

 Safety at Sea

 

SUNY Maritime College is pleased to once again partner with the Storm Trysail Foundation to host the popular hands-on Safety at Sea Seminar. On the water sessions and demonstrations include man overboard recovery, setting storm sails, emergency steering, pool sessions with PFD, life raft use and combating hypothermia. This US Sailing Sanctioned Seminar is designed to meet the Safety at Sea requirements for the 2016 Newport to Bermuda Race.

Private Sailing Lessons

Want to learn at your own pace or brush up on your skills? Private lessons with a US SAILING Certified Instructor on your boat or ours are a great way to build your confidence and focus on the skills most important to you. What’s more you can learn with family or friends at no additional cost. US SAILING  Basic Keelboat Certification available for extra fee if you meet the standards.

Date: At your convenience April – September, please confirm date BEFORE registering for a private lesson.

Time: At your convenience; minimum 3 hours

Age/Prerequisites: 10 years old +

Fee: $450 for 3-hour lesson (up to three people) on our boat; $300 for 3-hour lesson (up to three people) on your boat plus travel expenses; $100 each additional hour
