Learn to Sail (US SAILING Basic Keelboat)
Have you always wanted to learn how to sail? This is the course for you. No experience necessary. Let SUNY Maritime College’s US SAILING Certified Sailing Instructors share their love of sailing with you for pleasure, not profit.
This course emphasizes hands-on, on-the-water application of all skills supported by classroom instruction. Small student to instructor ratios (not more than three-four students per instructor/boat) on the most popular sailboats (J24, Sonar 23, Colgate 26) during four full days of instruction ensures you will quickly gain the skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of sailing memories. Topics covered include terminology, boat preparation, safety precautions, rigging, knots, wind awareness, boat handling, sail trim, basic navigation, weather and emergency procedures.
US SAILING programs are the national standard of instruction. Upon successful completion of the course, including on-the-water practical and written test you will receive a Basic Keelboat certification (obtainable by all students regardless of initial experience). This certifies you to operate a simple day sailing keelboat in familiar waters in light to moderate wind and sea conditions.
