Varsity Sailing Team

Maritime College sailing team has a long tradition of Developing Leaders Producing Champions since it was established in 1944.  Competing in what many regard as the most competitive district (Mid-Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association) of the Intercollegiate Sailing Association, Maritime consistently places in the top 10 in the district along with Georgetown, Hobart/William Smith, Columbia, Old Dominion University, the US Merchant Marine Academy, and the US Naval Academy. New York Maritime is consistently ranked as one of the Top 20 teams in the nation in Sailing World’s coaches poll.

The team roster currently consists of over 40 men and women from as far away as Washington, California and Michigan. With a schedule of over 60 events each year, on any given weekend from the beginning of September to Thanksgiving and from mid-February – May up to five different groups of Maritime sailors are competing at venues up and down the eastern seaboard. Students also participate in and help run several major collegiate and high school regattas hosted at Maritime College each semester.

Practices are held on-campus Monday – Friday following classes (4 p.m.) until sunset.  Maritime College’s fleet consists of twenty 420’s, six FJ’s, six J24's, a Frers 38 and a J-35.
