General Education Requirements

General Education Requirements

Before you can go in-depth in your major field, you will need to fulfill the college’s general education requirements. These courses are designed to give you a broad academic base and to ensure that you have the basic knowledge required to be successful in upper-division courses.

All students at SUNY Maritime must take courses to fulfill the following state requirements:

  • basic communication
  • math
  • natural sciences, such as biology, chemistry, geology, meteorology, oceanography and physics
  • American history
  • Western civilization
  • Other world civilizations
  • Social sciences
  • Humanities
  • Arts
  • Foreign language

Most of these courses are housed in the humanities and science departments.

SUNY Maritime students are also required to take three physical education courses. Courses are available in swimming, golf, sailing, safe powerboat handling, martial arts, yoga, racket sports, fencing, team sports, and zumba and dance.
