“Managing the Business”

Today’s business environment calls for a new approach to managing business in the maritime industry.   Managers must adapt and learn new ways to work in an increasingly global environment.  Despite the many uncertainties and time compressions that are a part of our world today, transportation managers need to adapt and excel in a world of derived demand.   It is the “golden thread” upon which the world relies for free, fast, reliable worldwide news, culture and goods. Professor Drogan’s presentation examines new and compelling ideas for contending with these new challenges and provides an outline for success.

10:00 a.m. Introduction of Anthony Parks

“Emergence of the Mexican Alternative”

The growth of container terminals in Mexico is presenting US ports and terminals with increasing competition.  Times of labor shortages and political unrest make the matter even more critical.   The increasing number of Mexican container terminals is creating logistical issues in US West Coast ports.   It has become a significant issue affecting our industry.   As the alliance between the Mexican government, Marine Terminal Corporation, railroads, and UP/BNSF to build container terminals in Mexico and then rail the containers into the USA expands, the topic deserves greater attention.   Mr. Parks will focus his address on answering the question:  How will all of this affect US port operations and unionized labor?
