Maritime’s Stephen B. Luce...
Friday, December 11, 2009

From L-R: Shafeek Fizal, Sommer Browning, Joseph WIlliams, and Constantia Constantinou

Library Director Constantia Constantinou has announced that an article written by Maritime’s Collection Development and Acquisitions Librarian Joseph Williams that he co-authored with a Hofstra University colleague (David Woolwine) as a chapter to the book Library Data: Empowering Practice and Persuasion, Darby Orcutt, Editor (Libraries Unlimited), will be published in 2010.  The title of Mr. William’s and Mr. Woolwine’s article is: “The Use of Grounded Theory in Interlibrary Loan Research: Compliance Always Occurs.”  The article discusses the exploration of the application “grounded theory,” a qualitative research methodology used in the social sciences, as applied to the study of Interlibrary Loan practices at various institutions, through the use of a practices survey.  The study represents the preliminary research to a much more comprehensive study of Interlibrary Loan practices and the effects of the acquisition of electronic databases.  For publication information, visit: http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/320193397.

In early December, Sommer Browning, Cataloging and Metadata Librarian, spoke at the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Conference, held at Baruch College in Manhattan.   Approximately 150 librarians attended the ACRL meeting, including many SUNY librarians (some who came from as far as Plattsburg).  The theme of the symposium was "Emerging Leadership in Academic Libraries” and Ms. Browning’s presentation focused on how the Stephen B. Luce Library has taken a leadership role in making our library's unique maritime bibliographic records and specialized maritime journals part of the Library of Congress’ database.  To read more about her presentation, visit: http://acrlnysymp09.wordpress.com/posters/.

Ms. Browning told the group of librarians that the long term project has been conducted in partnership with the cooperative online serials cataloging program (CONSER).  Commenting on Sommer Browning’s presentation, Library Director Constantia Constantinou noted “following her talk, many of our colleagues gathered around the Maritime table to discuss Sommer's project.  It was very well received!”   To learn more about the Stephen B.
