6.1 Periodical Indexes - an Overview

Nine things you need to know about periodicals

1. Periodical articles are very important sources of information for academic research.nytimes

2. Periodicals include newspapers and magazines and scholarly journals.

3. The journals are where the results of cutting-edge research are first published. And in some fields the journals are more highly regarded than books.

4. Many periodicals can be found online in an electronic format or in a printed version in the library.

5. The articles in periodicals are indexed, and can be searched, in a number of online databases available through the Luce Library website.

6. Although titles of periodicals can be found in the catalog, the articles within periodicals are not indexed in the library catalog. The articles within periodicals are also not indexed to a useful extent by general web search engines such as Yahoo or Google (not even GoogleScholar)

proquest7. Databases vary according to (a) subject (b) the periodicals they index, and (3) the extent to which they can deliver online-access to the full-text of an article. The eSubject Guides (under e-Resources on the Luce Library web site) will lead you to good databases for your research topic.

8. All the databases can be searched in much the same way you search the library catalog. That is, the search strategies you used in searching the library catalog are transferable to databases even though the interface of the database may be a bit different.SUNY_small

9. Only a few of the governmental or Open Access databases on the Luce Library website are part of the “free access Worldwide Web” . Access to most of the Luce Library databases is restricted to learners and scholars of the SUNY Maritime community and paid for through your tax and tuition money.

Note: You will need your library barcode number (begins with 00238.....) or your Maritime College ID number (begins with 000....) to access the databases from off-campus
