8.2 Addresses, Links, and URLs

Uniform Resource Locators (URLs for short) are used to locate files of information called sites, on remote computers. URLs are the "address" of these files, and are specific to each file or site. For example, the URL for the library at SUNY Maritime is: http://www.sunymaritime.edu/stephenblucelibrary/

Notice the ".edu" domain, that part of the web address indicates that the entity producing ithe web-resource is an educational institution. You've probably seen lots of other endings or domains within web addresses. Here are some other examples, and what sorts of institutions host the corresponding sites:

A URL by any other name...
  The .edu, .gov and .mil domains are regulated, whereas anyone can obtain and publish a site under a .com or .org domain.
  Keep in mind that students might be able to publish pages under an .edu domain, so check for some indication of authority on a given page
