8.4 Evaluation of Web Sites

How should you evaluate web sites you have located? Remember the evaluation criteria discussed earlier, we can further adapt it here for websites:

• Is it useful or relevant to your topic?

• Is the site timely? Is there any publication date, and has it been updated recently?

• Is the site appropriate for your purposes? Is it scholarly or general? Is it a .com, .edu, or .gov?

• Is the site authoritative? Is it signed? Is contact information provided? Has the author provided credentials? If no individual author is listed, or is the sponsoring organization reliable?

Remember: anyone can create a web site.
