8.6 Internet vs. Databases

Much of this module has been dedicated to helping you locate and evaluate quality websites on the internet; but, as indicated earlier, only a few governmental and Open Access databases on the Luce Library website are part of the “free access World Wide Web." Keep in mind that even if you get outstanding results from your search for quality websites, using only free-websites will probably mean that your research is insufficient for a university-level research paper.

scaleNote also that we covered websites after covering Reference materials, books, and databases; this was done to stress the importance of finding the best resource to meet your information need. Many people think that information obtained from the web is "good enough" to meet all information needs, especially when the information is so easily accessed. Academic research, however, requires tackling some of the more salient and scholarly sources that fill the "knowledge gap" and spur learners on to greater understanding.
