9.3 Citing sources

The two public interests of copyright inform the reasoning behind proper citation.

Proper citations benefit prior scholars, who receive credit for their work and thus build a reputation.

Proper citations diseminate the original scholar's research so that subsequent scholars can see the research for themselves and then further advance knowledge, without needing to re-invent the wheel with each project.

Proper citations help the reader distinguish what is a new contribution or what constitutes an advancement in knowledge within a subsequent scholar's work -- the latter then receives credit for his/her work and builds a reputation.
