Lieutenant Commander William F. Muir, USNR
New York State Maritime Academy Class of 1939

Went on active duty in the U.S. Naval Reserve in January 1941 and was assigned as Senior Assistant Engineer Officer in the Ammunition Ship USS PYRO (AE-1). Was present in that ship during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor transferring in April 1942. In May 1942, assumed duties as commissioning Chief Engineer in USS McCALLA (DD-488). While assigned to McCALLA, his ship escorted convoys in the North Atlantic and later transferred to the Pacific participating in the campaign for the Solomons and numerous engagements. He detached from McCALLA in July 1943 and assumed duties as an Engineering Instructor at the New York State Maritime Academy. He remained at the school after the war and was nicknamed “Salty” by his students for the green/gold color of his gold braid and his “beat up, shell shocked demeanor” which made him an excellent instructor well able to command the attention of 19 year old cadets. He left the school in 1952 to work in private industry. He passed away in 1992 and is an honoree in Heritage Hall at New York Maritime College.
