Services and Products

The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment provides the following services:

  • Collect, analyze and submit data for numerous reports and surveys, including SUNY’s internal data collection, IPEDS, SAM, government surveys, and higher education publications like U.S. News and World Report and the Princeton Review.

  • Support faculty and staff in assessing the learning outcomes of students and the effectiveness of achieving Maritime College’s mission and goals. Special focus is on the learning outcomes of academic and student affairs programs.

  • Support data collection for Middle States, ABET and U.S. Coast Guard assessments

  • Provide the information for senior management to make data-driven decisions and strategic planning

  • Assist with the processing, disseminating, collecting and analyzing course evaluations

  • Support the design, collection and analysis of internal and external surveys

  • Respond to internal requests for data from different departments and support ad hoc institutional research projects/working groups.

Data Request Policy - The Office of Institutional Research and Assessment encourages and supports the use of institutional data, analysis, and research for the decision making, in keeping with SUNY Maritime College’s educational mission. The primary purpose of this document is to provide a useful resource for anyone needing institutional information to support a project, initiative or presentation. It describes and explains guidelines for the use of institutional data.


  • Fast Facts: Provide a quick summary of key college data including: enrollment, student body composition, SAT scores, retention rate, graduation rate, degree and license information, alumni, philanthropy, tuition and fees, employee count, and student engagement. These data come primarily from Banner and SUNY Business Intelligence.

  • Enrollment Dashboards: Provide detailed information regarding current undergraduate and graduate program enrollment and student demographics. These data are extracted from Banner and updated each November.

  • Departmental Dashboards: Provide a five-year overview for each academic department and degree program. They include data regarding enrollment, degrees awarded, GPA, freshman retention and SAT scores, gender and diversity, professional program, student lifestyle, and licenses awarded. The dashboards are available on PrivateerNet.

  • Graduation Rate: Provides historical four and six year graduation rates.

  • IPEDS Feedback Report: This report graphically summarizes the data for Maritime College and compares it with peer institutions (identified by the college) regarding student enrollment, graduation rates, program completions, faculty, staff and finances. The figures are based on data collected during the previous IPEDS collection cycle and are the most recent available. The report can be useful for basic benchmarking and peer analysis.

  • Retention Rate: Provides historical first-year retention rates for first-time full-time freshmen.

  • Student Achievement Measure: This report gives additional data regarding graduation rates, transfer rates and completion rates for student who graduate from Maritime or who transfer and complete their degrees at another institution.

  • Performance Improvement Plan: To ensure accountability for the college and the public, each SUNY campus developed a comprehensive Performance Improvement Plan that includes a narrative about strategic priorities as well as data commitments through 2020-21 based on a standard series of metrics. SUNY Maritime College’s approved Performance Improvement Plan can be viewed here.

  • Maritime College Strategic Plan: A committee of faculty, staff and students, in collaboration with industry leaders, has developed a seven-year strategic plan, "Charting a New Course." The plan is in the final stages of development.

Experience Surveys:

  • Alumni Survey: A comprehensive survey of all alumni is conducted every five years. Between these comprehensive surveys, the office conducts annual surveys of alumni who graduated one or five years prior. Surveys ask alumni to evaluate their overall academic experiences, preparation for their first post-graduate experience, preparation for career, and evaluation of college life experiences. The survey also collects data on current career, licensure, professional examinations and advanced degrees. Executive summaries are disseminated to faculty and other stakeholders. 

  • Cadet Shipping Survey: Students who participated in the cadet shipping program offer feedback regarding their experience on a civilian-crewed ship. The survey examines how the experience contributed to the student's professional knowledge, leadership and management skills. It also provides feedback regarding support from the college and the workplace climate onboard the ship, as well as ways the experience can be improved.

  • COACHE Faculty Survey: Conducted by the Harvard Graduate School of Education, this survey examines full-time faculty job satisfaction regarding nature of work (research, service and teaching); clarity and reasonableness of tenure and promotion processes; satisfaction with personal and family supports; levels of climate and collegiality; leadership and governance. The COACHE report provides a comparative analysis with other participating COACE partners (112 colleges) and five comparison institutions, selected by Maritime College.

  • Course Evaluation Surveys: In the spring of 2016, the college adopted an online course evaluation system to afford all students the opportunity to provide course feedback. These surveys are anonymous and aggregated results are provided to each instructor.

  • National Survey of Student Engagement: The National Survey of Student Engagement is designed to obtain information from colleges and universities nationwide about student participation in programs and activities that institutions provide for their learning and personal development. The results provide an estimate of how undergraduates spend their time and what they gain from attending college. Survey items represent empirically confirmed "good practices" in undergraduate education. That is, they reflect behaviors by students and institutions that are associated with desired outcomes of college. The college participates in this survey every four years.

  • Student Exit Surveys: Prior to graduation, all graduating students complete an exit survey of post-graduate plans; evaluations of their personal and professional growth; and their satisfaction with programs, equipment and services. Additionally, students withdrawing from the college are requested to complete a survey to give a better understanding of their decision to attend and withdraw from Maritime.

  • Student Information Survey: This survey provides aggregated data regarding student enrollment, retention, graduation, employment, parent education level, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, disability support, and military/veteran status. It also provides a comparison to the various SUNY sectors: doctoral-degree-granting institutions, comprehensive four-year colleges, colleges of technology and community colleges. 

  • Student Opinion Survey: Every three years, Maritime College participates in the ACT Student Opinion Survey, which explores enrolled students’ satisfaction with programs, services and other aspects of college. The survey includes the following demographic information: age, ethnicity, gender, employment hours, parent educational attainment, class level, enrollment, residency, major and occupation. Students offer opinions about their college’s services and environment.

  • Summer Sea Term Survey: This survey aims to identify the program’s areas of strength and needed improvements. Administered annually, it is used to assess and improve the overall quality of the summer sea term cruise.

Survey Policy - This policy establishes a consistent procedure for managing surveys on campus. Such a policy allows us to use best practices in this area, to benefit the college and survey users. Benefits include improved use of existing and new data, better coordination of survey schedules, reduced survey fatigue and improved survey instruments.
