James leads the continuing education department at SUNY Maritime College. His duties include: day-to-day operational expertise and support; and guidance and instruction for navigation simulation, seamanship and maritime safety. He also supports other academic departments and is involved with developing the college's strategic plan.

James joined SUNY Maritime as a deck officer in 2008 and, while pursuing his master's degree, advanced his license to chief mate unlimited/1600 ton master. He was previously employed by Military Sealift Command.

As the college's director of professional education and training, he oversees professional mariner courses: scheduling, authoring and delivering them as needed. James was instrumental in updating five of the college's maritime simulators, overseeing installation and maintenance. 

James was involved in developing the bridging plan for implementing the 2010 Manilla Amendments into the college's license programs.
