Health Insurance

Domestic Insurance Information

Undergraduates:

SUNY Maritime requires that all full-time undergraduate students carry comprehensive health insurance. The college offers insurance to students through Consolidated Health Plans (CHP).

The annual insurance fee for the 2017-2018 year is included in the fall semester bill, as long as you are registered for at least 12 credits. Insurance is effective from August 10, 2017 to August 8, 2018.

Full-time undergraduates entering in the spring 2018 semester will be charged a health insurance fee for a policy that is effective from January 15 to August 9, 2018.

If you are registered for fewer than 12 credits, you will not be billed for insurance until you reach full-time status.

All students who are charged the insurance fee must either accept or waive the coverage. If you do not take an action by January 22, 2018, you will be enrolled in the AETNA insurance policy and will be responsible for the charge.

Students must complete an electronic enrollment or waiver form available here.

The form is available only for full-time students entering in spring 2018. It will close January 22, 2018.

Waiver requests must be resubmitted every year; they do not carry over.

Next Steps:

To Accept insurance: Complete the online enrollment.

To Waive Insurance: Complete the required information.  Upon Aetna’s approval, your health insurance fee will be reversed.

It is not required to provide proof of international coverage to waive the domestic insurance.

Questions to ask yourself before waiving

  • Will my current plan cover care in the New York Metropolitan area? (Some plans cover emergency only care outside their service area.)

  • Does your current plan provide coverage for a sports related injury?

If you have any doubts about the above questions, please check your current health insurance policy or contact your current insurance agent.

Insurance for any study abroad program, including but not limited to Summer Sea Term and/or Cadet Shipping, will be automatically billed with the cost of the course. This insurance is not through CHP and cannot be waived.

If you have questions about enrollment, contact SUNY Maritime's Student Accounts Office at (718) 409-7400 Option 2 or studentaccounts@sunymaritime.edu

Questions about coverage should be directed to Aetna at (877) 480-4161.

You may be eligible for coverage under your parents' plan if you are younger than 26. If you have questions or concerns, contact AETNA at the number above.

Graduate Students:

SUNY Maritime does not require graduate students to provide proof of insurance coverage, and so there is no insurance fee.

As a courtesy, AETNA Student Health Insurance Plans (SHIP) offers a policy. It is up to you as a student to decide to enroll. SUNY Maritime will not bill you for the insurance; you will pay AETNA directly. If interested, call (877) 480-4161 or visit https://www.aetnastudenthealth.com.
