What is Dynamic Positioning (DP)?

Dynamic Positioning is a sophisticated vessel maneuvering system that integrates an array of vessel location data and environmental characteristics (such as wind and wave force data) with vessel propulsion in real time in order to maintain a specific vessel heading or location. It is used extensively in the conventional offshore oil and gas, marine construction and marine diving sectors, as well as within the offshore wind community. Navigation officers aboard DP-equipped vessels must complete additional, specialized training with DP systems in order to qualify for watch-standing and navigation on a DP vessel.

Who Credentials DP?

Both DP officers and DP training centers must be independently credentialed to industry standards in order to be accepted by operators. The principal, global credentialing authority for DP systems is the UK-based Nautical Institute (NI). The NI promulgates and maintains the global DP technical training standards, certifies training centers and credentials individual mariner for the appropriate DP endorsements. In general, the NI's criterion represent the "gold standard" for dynamic positioning training specifications, and DP course approval by the NI would make SUNY Maritime College able to deliver US workforce training in a unique, competitive and supportive way.

Over 90% of the worldwide training centers that offer dynamic positioning courses are certified by the NI, and SUNY Maritime College is one of only two US maritime academies to offer NI-Approved DP courses. More information about DP training schemes and the NI can be found at Nautical Institute - Maritime Industry.

DP Training Courses

There are two levels of DP training, alongside an accompanying sea time requirement in order for a mariner to achieve full, unlimited DP certification (which is listed as an endorsement on their license). While there are many steps to achieve full DP certification a simplified scheme generally follows as such:

  • DP Induction Course (DP Basic)
  • 60 qualifying sea days aboard a DP vessel
  • DP Simulator Course (DP Advanced)
  • 60 qualifying sea days about a DP vessel

Maritime College's Dynamic Positioning is a sophisticated suite of systems, that integrate advanced software simulations with physical equipment and robust courseware in order to provide a technically-advanced, high-quality navigational course for DP Operator candidates.
