As a Marine Operations major, students will learn about the business of shipping from the fleet operations perspective – how to manage and maintain a company’s fleet of ships – as well as how to sail, power and navigate a commercial vessel.
The program is designed to combine business, humanities courses, and basic engineering concepts to provide the skills and knowledge needed to work on a vessel and in the maritime industry.
Academic Program
The Marine Operations program is designed to give students real-world insight and expertise into the business of shipping. Marine Operations courses include economics, physics, transportation systems, and other business courses. In choosing to study Marine Operations, students will also pursue a U.S. Coast Guard license.

Hands-On Training
All students in the Deck and Engine license programs must complete three summers of training aboard a ship. At least two of those summers must be completed aboard the Empire State VII, while participating in Summer Sea Term.
If they choose, students may apply to work aboard a commercial vessel for their second summer, often called Cadet Shipping.
