The Shipping and Logistics graduate program provides a solid foundation in international business, economics and law, in transportation management and in systems analysis. It prepares students for leading the industry of the future. For over 50 years, the program has produced graduates who are leaders in the global maritime, logistics, and transportation industries and international trade, among others. The program has a strong industry focus and is taught by our internationally renowned faculty who are deeply involved in all aspects of maritime commerce, logistic, and shipping. Whether you wish to advance your current career or transition to a new field, our expert faculty, industry relationships, and strong alumni network will steer you to excellence and professional success.

Building on a solid foundation in transportation management, economics, international business and law, students progress to specialized courses in shipping, international trade, supply chain management, and logistics. Students work with faculty to choose course portfolios tailored to their needs and aspirations. Students can also undertake an optional internship.

Full-time students can complete the 34-credit program is as little as 18 months, assuming at least a 9-credit course load per semester. The program has in-person and distance learning options.

Students have the option to obtain a USCG 3rd Mate License while completing the MS in Shipping & Logistics. This option extends the duration and fees for the program.

Three Program Options

34-Credit degree — MS in Shipping and Logistics

This program requires a student to complete six core courses, four electives, and one culminating capstone course. This program can be completed online, on campus, or a blend of the two.

40-credit degree - MS in Shipping and Logistics with Advanced Certificate in Supply Chain Management

This program includes the Advanced Certificate in Supply Chain Management, an additional credential to help you in your career. The program includes six core courses, four supply-chain management courses, two electives, and the culminating capstone.

96-credit degree - MS in Shipping and Logistics with Deck License*

In this program, students pursue the 34-credit master's degree and the U.S. Coast Guard third mate license together. The license requires 62 credits at the undergraduate level. Students in this program may take graduate courses online, but to earn the license you must be an on-campus student and belong to the regiment of cadets.

*The USCG License is granted only to U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents. While international students are welcome to complete all UCG certification training, they are not eligible for the USCG license. International students must work with the maritime authorities in the country of their domicile to ascertain if or how their training can be applied to their home country's licensure requirements.

As a MS in Shipping and Logistics student, you may choose from a variety of elective courses to suit your interests and professional needs, including liner and tramp shipping, port operations, international trade, economics, insurance, law and other topics.

Capstone Course or Thesis

With the capstone option, a student will take one 3-credit course that is the culmination of the MS in Shipping and Logistics program and is designed to draw upon the knowledge acquired in all of the preceding courses. Students work in groups to perform directed team research and make a group presentation to faculty and outside evaluators. The prerequisite for the capstone course is completion of all core courses with a total of 25 completed credits and a 3.0 GPA.

With the thesis option, a student will work with a supervising faculty member to conduct original research and write a thesis paper in two 3-credit courses.

Certificates

The GBAT Department offers two separate certificates:

Chartering Certificate

The chartering certificate may be completed as part of the regular 34-credit master's program or on its own. To earn the certification, you must successfully complete two courses in charter parties: TMGT 8450 Advanced Charter Parties I and TMGT 8460 Advanced Charter Parties II. These courses are offered in cooperation with the Association of Ship Brokers and Agents, the U.S. representative to the Federation of National Associations of Ship Brokers and Agents.

Advanced Certificate in Supply Chain Management

This 21-credit certificate allows for graduate studies in specialized supply-chain management courses. Demand for supply-chain management professionals has been growing for more than a decade; earning this stand-along certificate can fast-track your career in a growing profession. This program cannot be completed online.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of a Master of Science in Shipping and Logistics, the graduate will be able to:

  1. Implement appropriate analytical and research methods necessary to gather and communicate insights on emerging transportation issues.
  2. Interpret and execute knowledge of theories and principles of transportation systems.
  3. Examine the impact of globalization and geopolitical forces on international trade.
  4. Understand and illustrate market ready shipping industry business practices and operational requirements of intermodal transportation with an emphasis on the shipping industry.
  5. Demonstrate an integrative and broad mastery of ethical principles, leadership abilities, and multi-cultural awareness.

1. Apply insights gathered through analytical and research methods to address issues that may arise out of time and demise charter party fixtures, voyage charter party fixtures and / or contracts of affreightment, and position themselves to better protect their (or their principal’s) interest by the negotiation of more favorable contract terms.

2. Demonstrate the use of charter parties within the context of other transport systems, logistics, and the supply chain.

3. Examine the impact of globalization and geopolitical forces on time and demise charter parties, voyage charter parties and contracts of affreightment, under the laws of various seafaring nations, including the United States, United Kingdom, and emerging maritime / trading centers.

4. Illustrate the basic principles, skills, and tools of shipping, chartering and chartered vessel operations as they relate to international transportation management overall.

5. Integrate ethical principles and leadership into one’s life, which includes demonstrating compliance with principles of academic integrity, as well as an understanding of the ethical considerations and ethical codes that are adhered to in the business of shipping and chartering.

  4. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of basic supply chain management principles with an emphasis on the maritime nexus.
  5. Demonstrate the mastery of ethical principles and moral codes of professional behavior as applied to supply chain management in a multi-cultural business environment.

U.S. Coast Guard License

In addition to the standard curriculum, a student may pursue a U.S. Coast Guard deck license. Licensure creates the opportunity for a graduate to work on a marine vessel as a third mate. To earn a license, you must be an on-campus student and belong to the regiment of cadets. This program is a 96-credit program, including the 62-credit undergraduate license program.
