Stephen B. Luce Library is the academic library of SUNY Maritime College. Named after Rear Admiral Stephen Bleecker Luce, a pioneering figure in U.S. naval and maritime education, the library honors his lasting legacy in advancing professional maritime training.
The library was established to support cadets and faculty's specialized academic and professional needs at SUNY Maritime, the nation's oldest maritime academy. Over the years, it has grown into a premier maritime research facility, housing a robust collection of materials focused on marine transportation, naval science, oceanography, engineering, international trade, and maritime law. In addition to its general collections, the Luce Library is home to several important archival collections, including historical records of the New York Nautical School and its training ships—St. Mary's, Newport, and the Empire State. These archives preserve the institution’s long and rich history from its founding in 1874.
Today, the Stephen B. Luce Library provides students, researchers, and maritime professionals with access to cutting-edge digital resources, special collections, and expert research support, serving as a vital hub for maritime scholarship and education. The library's print and digital collections are searchable through the online catalog.
