Ship Systems Changes

Effective Fall 2025, the Ship Systems sequence (previously Ship Systems I, II, III, and IV) has been updated. The courses have been rearranged, renamed, and renumbered, and one of them has been replaced. Please select the description below that best describes you to see what you should do to complete your Ship Systems sequence.

If you don't fit neatly into one of the scenarios below, or you have any additional questions, you should contact Professor Breglia for assistance.

I entered Maritime College in Fall 2025 and haven't taken ENGR 540 yet.

You should follow your Degree Curriculum and take the following courses:

  1. ENGR 540 Intro to Ship Systems (spring only)
  2. ENGR 545 Motor Plants (fall only)
  3. ENGR 546 Shipboard Electrical Systems (spring only)
  4. ENGR 547 Boilers and Auxiliaries (fall only)
  5. ENGR 548 Steam and Gas Turbines (spring only)
I have completed ENGR 540 and SST I.

You should take the following courses to replace Ship Systems I-IV:

  1. ENGR 545 Motor Plants (fall only)
  2. ENGR 546 Shipboard Electrical Systems (spring only)
  3. ENGR 547 Boilers and Auxiliaries (fall only)
  4. ENGR 548 Steam and Gas Turbines (spring only)
I have completed ENGR 540, 542, and 541.

You should take the following courses to replace Ship Systems III and IV:

  1. ENGR 545 Motor Plants (fall only)
  2. ENGR 548 Steam and Gas Turbines (spring only)
I have completed ENGR 540, 542, 541, 543, and 544.

Congratulations, you don't need to worry about taking any of the updated courses! However, some students may notice that their Ship Systems courses are listed under "Fall Through" in DegreeWorks, and that the new courses are listed under their requirements. If this is happening to you, you should email Dr. Gosselin for assistance. Your DegreeWorks will be manually updated to reflect that you already finished the previous courses.

I passed a Ship Systems course, but it's listed under Fall Through on DegreeWorks.

You do not need to take extra or redundant license courses! We're working out some of the bugs of this changeover in DegreeWorks. If something looks wrong, you should email registrar@sunymaritime.edu, tell them what classes are listed incorrectly, and ask them to fix it.

I failed a Ship Systems course and need to retake it.

The table below shows the equivalencies between the old and new courses. If you failed a class listed on the left, you should take the class listed to its right to replace it.
