Stephen Payne, OBE - Genesis of a Queen: Queen Mary 2

Discover the story behind one of the most celebrated ocean liners of our time. On Tuesday, November 17, SUNY Maritime College welcomes renowned naval architect Stephen Payne for a special presentation on the design and construction of the Queen Mary 2.

Genesis of a Queen: Queen Mary 2

Stephen Payne, OBE, is an internationally recognized naval architect best known for leading the design of Cunard’s Queen Mary 2. During his career with Carnival Corporation, he contributed to the design of approximately 40 passenger ships and was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to the shipping industry.

In his lecture, Genesis of a Queen: Queen Mary 2, Payne will share the story behind the design and construction of this iconic vessel, the only true ocean liner operating today, and explain what distinguishes an ocean liner from a cruise ship.

The James Harvey Tomb Leadership Lecture Series brings prominent maritime figures, authors, and industry leaders to campus to share insights on leadership, history, and service. The series is made possible through the Class of October 1946 Fund through the Maritime College Alumni Association.

Join us for an engaging evening celebrating maritime innovation, leadership, and the enduring legacy of ocean liner design.
