The B.S. in Data Science and Machine Learning at SUNY Maritime currently offers a concentration in Logistics and Transportation.
What is Data Science?
AI will transform supply chain management by enhancing demand forecasting, quality control, inventory management, risk assessment, and cybersecurity. This shift toward proactive optimization will underpin efficient decision-making in supply chain management.

You might have marveled in the past about how shipping companies — be it UPS, FedEx or Maersk Shipping Line — are able to provide accurate delivery dates and times once you place the order or ship your consignments. You might have wondered how Uber Eats ensures that millions of customers get their food hot and on time every hour of the day, every day in nearly 6000 cities across 45 countries; or how you are able to get real-time guidance about traffic in any part of the country on your smartphone.
All these operations involve continuous collection of millions of data points, organization of the data, data analysis, interpretation of the results, and recommendations for decisions about the most effective and efficient schedules and routes to follow. All this, in a matter of seconds or less! Data Scientists make these operations possible in our technological world with their expertise in Data Science.
Data Science is an interdisciplinary field that combines mathematics, statistics, analytics, computer science, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) to effectively collect, analyze, and interpret data to gain insights for decision-making, to increase the efficiency of operations, and for increased accuracy in predicting future events for business, government and other organizations.
Our information age continues to generate vast amounts of structured and unstructured data from numerous sources. Data Scientists know how to organize, analyze, synthesize and interpret the results, and make actionable recommendations. Data Scientists also have the expertise to harness the potential of AI to speed up decision-making and increase the accuracy of decisions. For these reasons, Data Scientists will be increasingly in demand in the future.
What Do You Learn in the Program?
You will learn from our professors who are experts in the areas of data mining, data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI) with specific applications to the shipping, logistics and transportation industries. The program is designed to be practical with an emphasis on application. You will learn:
- Programming languages such as Python and R enable you to acquire, clean, organize and present data.
- Statistical methods to analyze and make predictions from the data.
- Multivariable calculus and linear algebra, which are essential for AI
- Various A.I. methods, including Deep Neural Networks, including the latest models such as BERT and GPT.
- Application of Data Analytics, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to the business of shipping, logistics and supply chains.
The program culminates in a capstone course that combines all of these skills to build your own portfolio. Students may graduate after earning (120) credits.
Careers in Data Science
Our graduates have a wide range of opportunities across industries including shipping, supply chain management, logistics, financial services, healthcare, technology, education, and government, among others.
The labor market for Data Scientists is one of the top ten growth professions. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay in 2022 for an entry-level Data Scientist with a Bachelor’s degree was $103,500 per annum. The demand for Data Scientists is outstripping the supply with a projected growth rate of 35% for the profession during 2022-32. In 2022 alone, there were 168,900 jobs available.
In the maritime industry alone, the analytics market is expected to grow from $1.1 billion in 2022 to $2.2 billion by 2028. With these investments, the opportunities for Data Scientists are certain to multiply within the shipping, supply chain and logistics sectors.

Am I eligible to enroll in the program?
To be successful in the program, students need to have good preparation in mathematics, in particular calculus. The following courses or equivalent preparation are strongly recommended before entry into the program:
- Completion of Pre-Calculus by graduation
- Completion of AP calculus
- AP computer Science courses
