Mechanical Engineering & Facilities Engineering Changes

Effective Fall 2025-26, significant changes were made to the Mechanical Engineering and Facilities Engineering Programs, as detailed below. Queries about changes of major and/or catalog year that aren't answered by the information below should be directed to Dr. Gosselin.

Dr. Gosselin will be hosting an information session to explain these changes, and forms will be available for anyone who wants to opt into one of these tracks that day.

When: Thursday, October 30th, 1500-1600
Where: S&E Lecture Hall
Who should attend: anyone who is currently a Mechanical Engineering or Facilities Engineering student and wants to better understand the new Mechanical Design and Thermal-Fluids tracks in Mechanical Engineering and may even want to opt into one of these tracks.

Overview

As of Fall 2025-26, Mechanical Engineering expanded into two tracks: the Mechanical Design Track, and the Thermal-Fluids Track. The Mechanical Design track is virtually identical to Mechanical Engineering in 2024-25 and earlier catalog year. The Thermal-Fluids track is virtually identical to Facilities Engineering in 2024-25 and earlier catalog years, with the exception of replacing ENGR 390 Applied Electronics with ENGR 495 Marine Electrical Systems.

In the 2025-26 catalog year, the two tracks differ by only 7 courses:

Mechanical Design Track-Specific CoursesThermal-Fluids Track-Specific Courses

ENGR 503 Manufacturing Processes I*

ENGR 312 Machine Design

ENGR 454 Vibrations

ENGR 418 Mechanical Engineering Design I

ENGR 456 Computer-Aided Engineering

ENGR 419 Mechanical Engineering Design II

An additional Engineering Elective

ENGR 424 HVAC Systems Operations & Management

ENGR 495 Marine Electrical Systems

ENGR 425 Facilities Engineering Design I

ENGR 423 HVAC System Design

ENGR 350 Automation & Control Systems

ENGR 426 Facilities Engineering Design I

ENGR 444 Engineering Project Management

*ENGR 503 is a required course for all Engine License students, but it is only required of Intern Option students in the Mechanical Design Track.

Motivation

The reasons for these changes are as follows:

  • To allow students with an interest in HVAC design, building control and energy management, power generation and distribution, and related fields to be more competitive when applying to companies that may be unfamiliar with the Facilities Engineering major.
  • To simplify the process for students with an interest in Facilities Engineering Design to pursue that area of study without changing major.

Which Track to Choose

  • Your diploma will look identical regardless of which track you choose; that is, it will show only your major of Mechanical Engineering, and not your track. The underlying classes, however, will be different. This can be listed on your resume to indicate to employers that you have relevant knowledge for particular positions.
  • The track you choose is ultimately up to you, but you are strongly encouraged to discuss your choice with your advisor, as well as with faculty in each area of study, if you are unsure which you prefer.

How This Affects You

Please select the scenario below that best describes you to determine what you should do.

I am a Mechanical Engineering major with a catalog year of 2024-25 and earlier.

If you wish to pursue the Mechanical Design Track, you don't need to do anything, as it exactly matches the Mechanical Engineering program in your catalog year.

If you wish to pursue the Thermal-Fluids Track, you should do the following:

  • Complete a Change of Curriculum Form to request both a change of catalog year and a change of track. The catalog year should be 2025-26, and you should select the Thermal-Fluids Track.
  • Submit this form to the Engineering Department Office (S&E 2-35, or email an electronic copy to engr-advising@sunymaritime.edu) for approval, then to the registrar for processing.
  • Ensure that you complete all necessary courses on schedule as outlined in the relevant flowchart for the major and path. Note that some courses are semester-locked, and that ENGR 351 Heat Transfer must be completed with a C or better before you can take ENGR 423 HVAC System Design and ENGR 425 Facilities Engineering Design I.
I am a Mechanical Engineering major with a catalog year of 2025-26 and later.

In your first semester at Maritime College, you will be asked to select a track by filling out a simple online form. If you fail to do this before the stated deadline, a track will be chosen for you. If you decide to change your track, you must make the change no later than advising during your 5th semester at Maritime College (the semester in which Thermodynamics and Strength of Materials are listed on the degree curricula). To change your track, you must do the following:

  • Complete a Change of Curriculum Form to request a change of track to the Thermal-Fluids Track.
I am a Facilities Engineering major.

If you wish to remain a Facilities Engineering Major, you may do so. This major will be removed from the catalog in Fall 2026, but you will be allowed to finish your current program.

If you wish to change to Mechanical Engineering with the Thermal-Fluids Track, you should take the following steps:

  • Complete a Change of Curriculum Form to request both a change of major and a change of track. The major should be Mechanical Engineering, and the track should be the Thermal-Fluids Track. By college policy, your catalog year will be updated to the most recent one when you make this change.
  • Note that the 2025-26 catalog year of the Mechanical Engineering Thermal-Fluids Track includes ENGR 495 Marine Electrical Systems, whereas earlier catalog years of Facilities Engineering included ENGR 390. If you have already taken ENGR 390, you do not need to take ENGR 495. This requirement will be waived. If you have not yet taken ENGR 390, you must take ENGR 495 instead.
