Maritime Students Help Restore NYC Waters Through Billion Oyster Project Partnership
Through our partnership with the Billion Oyster Project, students in Maritime College's Marine Environmental Science program are playing an active role in restoring local waterways both on campus and in the East River. As part of ongoing fieldwork, students collect and analyze environmental data to assess ecosystem health.
Recent data collection revealed the highest number of fish observed to date, an encouraging sign of improving water quality and a thriving marine habitat. These findings underscore the impact of hands-on environmental stewardship and long-term restoration efforts.
Students are preparing for their next site visit, continuing their commitment to rehabilitating local waters and advancing a cleaner, more sustainable future for New York City's waterways.
